Originally built in 1789, the main house served as a hospital during the Civil War and survived attempts to burn it down. Its history lends itself to paranormal speculation. Guests and staff have reported hearing unexplained footsteps, particularly from the third floor, which previously housed innkeepers. On occasion, people have heard these footsteps late at night, around 2:30 am, even when the rooms were unoccupied, adding to the mystery of who, or what, walks the halls 'by the side of the road'.
